The Anointing & The Holy Oils

Updated: May 28, 2024

In more recent decades, the science of distilling essential oils of the Bible as pure, concentrated components has been honed. As researchers and chemists learned more about chemical composition in the early 1900s, they were able to perfect the ability to isolate these compounds and, later, analyse their exact composition to understand more about their specific benefits. Unfortunately, with that ability came the appeal of synthetics and attempts to mimic the art of harnessing nature from the predictable halls of a laboratory.

As the ancient practice of perfumery began to meld with the newly confirmed healing actions of aromatic oils, the temptation has been to synthesize the fragrance in an attempt to replicate the benefits. There is no replacement for creation, however. As we walk through the commonly cited oils of the Bible, we should remember to honour their intended purpose rather than trying to recreate them as we see fit.

Is the LORD pointing you to anointing with oils. Wherever the oil is applied, it represents the power of the HOLY SPIRIT and the BLOOD OF JESUS for protection and deliverance, I found a prayer of 'consecration' to sanctify the oil and then used it with the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT. I have put this prayer down as a 'sample prayer.' Once the oil is sanctified, it is now ready to be used in anointing yourself, or where ever the LORD is leading you.

The Meaning of Consecration

"The separation of oneself from things that are unclean, especially anything that would contaminate one’s relationship with a perfect God.” Consecration also carries the connotation of sanctification, holiness, or purity. " Click Here for More

Cleansing and Purification

I believe that when we use the oil, in faith, it represents the working of the HOLY SPIRIT to purify and cleanse where it is applied. FAITH IS THE KEY! We can see this principle in the Old Testament the priests and Aaron where anointed with a special oil for cleansing and purification purposes.

We can also see the principle of applying the oil on objects. In Leviticus 8:10-11 and Exodus 40:9 we can see that they consecrated the tabernacle and the item inside, like the altar, utensils and basin. This gives us Biblical confirmation on the applying of oil on our houses and our personal possessions.

I believe that anointing with oil is part of a spiritual warfare strategy. With it we are proclaiming the protection and deliverance with the power of the HOLY SPIRIT and the BLOOD OF THE LAMB.

Heal the Sick

The other purpose of anointing with oil is to heal the sick. We can see this in

" Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven." James 5:14-15

"They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them." Mark 6:13

When someone is sick, we can anoint them with oil on the place where the sickness is, and by faith, claim a healing. We can also do this on ourselves, if the LORD is leading through the HOLY SPIRIT.

We must remember that the oil itself has no healing powers of its own--it is only through faith, claiming Scripture and the working of the HOLY SPIRIT, that will we see results.

There are many places in the Bible where the HOLY SPIRIT is represented by oil. This is an important issue. It is through the HOLY SPIRIT that we can claim healing, deliverance and protection.

Praise and Worship

We also find that JESUS was anointed with fragrant oils by Mary who poured it on HIS feet and wiped it with her long hair. I believe that this was an act of worship, praise and thanksgiving towards her LORD.

Prerequisites

As far as I know, there really is no 'formula' on how to anoint with oil. It is a leading of the HOLY SPIRIT as well as using Scripture for our base. However, I do believe that there are a few prerequisites before anointing.

1) I believe you must be saved and walking with the LORD.

2) Confess your sins before the LORD and make sure that you are right with HIM.

3) Consecrate your oil with a consecrating prayer (sample prayer below)

I only have been using only olive oil, however, after doing research for this article, I realized that, Biblically speaking, the oil was always fragranced. So, I will be changing my next batch to include an essential oil. You can make your own anointing oil with olive oil and an essential oil, or you can purchase ones that are already mixed for you.

PLEASE understand that I am not an expert in this. I just am sharing with you what I have been learning on my own and hope that it might help others. Please feel free to share and comment below with any of your experiences you have had or practices with anointing oil so that we can all learn from one another...
